Steam doesn't include the music CD image, so if you go that route you'll have to download the music track files. In any case, wherever you buy Quake you'll end up getting the pak0.pak and pak1.pak game data files, which (aside from the music) is all you need. If you're going to be playing multiplayer, or any community-made singleplayer addons, you'll need to use a modern Quake program instead of the one that you get from Steam/GOG or from your Quake CD.There's a lot of choices there. For singleplayer you could make use of this to get started:Multiplayer is a different story and we can talk about that if you like. You can always look into - a smaller, simpler port derived from Fitzquake as is Mark V in 's post- as your source port of choice for singleplayer. It's basically GLQuake but with various bugs fixed (overbright textures not working, palette being unused preventing fullbright colors from working, various examples of Z-fighting introduced in the original maps when not run in software mode, etc.) and pretty much the go-to port for custom maps and mods. You can even turn off texture filtering and both movement and animation interpolation if you want that OG Quake feel.

Quakespasm and Mark V are my go-to engines for singleplayer. You can get the winquake variant of Mark V to look super close to original WinQuake, and the other Mark V variants and Quakespasm are basically GLQuake. No visual changes/fanciness if you don't want it. And you get bugfixes, widescreen support, soundtrack music file support, and the ability to play lots of user-created maps that don't run on the original engines.I'd really suggest (to the OP) giving those a try if you are interested in singleplayer. If you have concerns about them let us know what's up.If in the end you're still super-committed to using the original Quake engines, it's possible they will still work fine for you on your Win10 system.
